Information for Referring Vets

Liphook Equine Hospital welcomes referrals from veterinary surgeons across the UK

About our referrals

Why refer to the Liphook Equine Hospital?

First and foremost because the care of your clients’ horse, pony or donkey is the most important thing to us. Our hospital clinicians are recognised specialists in their field and are dedicated to providing your clients’ animals with the very best treatment and care.

Our nursing team is probably the largest equine nursing team in the UK. Many of them have specialist nursing qualifications in equine nursing. We could cut costs by employing fewer nurses but we recognise that the quality of the nursing team plays a huge part in the overall care your clients’ animals get.

Our large equine hospital has recently been rebuilt and provides advanced facilities with stabling for up to 50 horses, intensive care units, large ménage and dedicated trot up and lunging areas, large fully equipped surgery suite, advanced equine diagnostic imaging equipment including digital radiography and ultrasonography, scintigraphy and magnetic resonance imaging. There is also a large designated equine laboratory on site enabling us to perform rapid clinical pathology.
We will support you with readily available advice on cases even if they are not referred, free verbal reporting of radiographs and educational resources such as a regular CPD programme, a regular newsletter and downloadable information sheets on our website. We are very happy for you to visit us and we welcome colleagues who want to ‘see practice’.

How to refer a case to us?

We recognise that there are many different reasons to refer a case and we are always happy to discuss a case with you prior to committing to a referral.

If you wish to refer an emergency or urgent case during office hours please call the hospital office on 01428 727200 or out of hours please call 01428 727727.

For non urgent referrals please call the hospital office on 01428 727200. Alternatively you may submit a referral form and one of our receptionists will call you back within 1 working day to discuss your requirements. Generally, for non-urgent appointments, we will contact the owners directly to arrange the appointment details.

In order to provide optimal care to the referred horse we request that referring veterinarians should provide us with a full case history for any case they are referring, including the results of any diagnostic procedures they have already undertaken and any treatment or medication that the horse has received.

Our commitment to you

We will send you a detailed report after we have seen the case. If a horse is hospitalised for we will also keep you updated about the horse’s progress.

If at any stage you would like an update on a case in the hospital, or some advice about a case you are managing, please do call us or send an e-mail.

We will fax or e-mail you a copy of the discharge instructions  on the day the horse is  discharged so that you know the patient has gone home and you will be up to date, should the client contact you before our final report arrives. We will usually discharge the animal with sufficient medication to last them for 5-10 days, but will rely on you to dispense ongoing long term medication or to remove sutures.
