IgG

IgG

Serum (clotted blood) or EDTA plasma

Used in neonatal foals as a marker of transfer of passive immunity. Very little is absorbed
from colostrum beyond 6-12 hours of age so testing can be performed from 6 hours old.
Most normal foals return values > 12 mg/dL and values >8g/L offer reassurance that a
reasonable amount of colostral IgG has been absorbed.
Values below 8 g/L suggest suboptimal transfer and high risk of sepsis and plasma transfusion
would be advisable.
