GGT

GGT

GGT (gamma glutamyltransferase)
Serum (clotted blood) or heparinised plasma

 Mainly from hepatic sources although pancreas and intestine also may contribute to
increases in plasma concentrations.
 The most sensitive hepatic enzyme (i.e. unusual for liver disease cases to have normal
concentrations).
 Renal tubular epithelium has high concentrations although, when cells are damaged,
GGT is released into urine rather than plasma and urinary testing can be used as a
sensitive marker of renal tubular damage.
 Common to see increases in colon displacements and impaction.
