CK (Creatine kinase)

Serum (clotted blood) or heparinised plasma

Mainly derived from skeletal muscle although cardiac and smooth muscle might also
contribute. Relatively rapid plasma clearance and generally normalises within 3-7 days of a
single muscular insult. CK peaks around 4-6 hours after muscle injury and so this period can
be targeted in a post exercise sample to maximise the likelihood of identifying mild exertional
myopathies.
