Matthew was born in South Africa and grew up surrounded by dogs and horses and a menagerie of other pets. Here he acted as an ambulatory vet providing care to sports, racing and riding horses and as surgical assistant in the referral hospital. During this time, he obtained an honour’s degree in equine surgery from the University of Pretoria and a diploma in equine surgery from the University of Sydney.
His surgical interests brought him to the UK and the University of Liverpool in 2015, where he undertook a rotating clinical equine internship followed by a residency in equine surgery. After completing his residency and master’s degree, Matthew stayed on at Leahurst as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery.
In 2020, Matthew moved to the Liphook Equine Hospital as an equine surgeon and lameness and diagnostic imaging clinician. He is a European and royal college boarded specialist in large animal surgery.
