Glucose

Glucose

Oxalate fluoride plasma (preferably separated)

Hypoglycaemia is not uncommon in sick neonates but extremely rare in adult horses (very
rarely reported as a paraneoplastic syndrome).
Hyperglycaemia is commonly associated with alpha-2 sedation, stress and pain. Persistent
hyperglycaemia defines diabetes mellitus and occasional cases are encountered in horses,
primarily in association with PPID.
Glucose challenge testing can be useful in the contexts of weight loss (malabsorption) or
insulin dysregulation (see EMS).
