Russell graduated from the University of Bristol in 2004 and initially worked in equine practice before starting a residency in equine surgery at the University of Edinburgh along with an MSc on Equine Stem cells in 2008. In 2012 he became a European Specialist in Equine Surgery and stayed on at Edinburgh as a Lecturer in Equine Surgery. Russell joined LEH in 2014 and became a clinical director in 2022. Russell is a past Chair of the Equine Clinical Board in VetPartners, and is currently a member of the Executive Board. His professional interests include all aspects of equine surgery, lameness investigation and diagnostic imaging, but he also has a special interest in orthopaedic surgery. Russell is also a member of the ARVS (Association of Racecourse Veterinary Surgeons). 
  
Russell is married and has 2 daughters who take a keen interest in the family dogs and horses, so most of his time is spent as an unpaid groom/chauffeur/dogwalker! He used to enjoy playing polo so and would like to start playing again in the future.
